I have done some research and produced the following. First and foremost, it is an over century tradition that red pants are only worn by those who crossed the Atlantic by boat. Apparently, it is considered a signal to the outside world (at least the initiates) that one of the most classic journeys has been made.
A somewhat newer interpretation is that you also have to have entered into a sailing team when you made the trip. However, this interpretation seems to be only a few decades old.
Another interpretation I have seen is that it is rather rascal and that it would mean bad luck wearing red trousers aboard an Atlantic cruise. Therefore, it is best to wait until it comes ashore.
